What is Posit+ve Energy?
The Petroleum Economist Ltd has co-hosted the Women's Global Leadership Conference for the past three years. Held in Houston, and run by our sister company Gulf Publishing, the Conference has been hugely successful, bringing together hundreds of women leaders from the energy and technology industries.
To build on the achievements of the Women's Global Leadership Conference, the Petroleum Economist launched the Posit+ve Energy network for women in the energy industry in July 2007. Posit+ve Energy offers its worldwide members the opportunity to access information about the industry and contact other industry executives to network and share experiences and knowledge both online and face-to-face at our events.
The Background
Women continue to face barriers within organisations and are clearly under-represented at the top of organisational hierarchies. The Equal Opportunity Commission reports that it will be yet another generation before equality is reached in many professional sectors. One reason for women’s continued disadvantage is that women lack access to informal organisational networks. In response to this shortcoming, both organisations and women within organisations have begun establishing women’s networks.
With this is mind the Petroleum Economist formed Posit+ve Energy a network specifically aimed at supporting and enabling women in the energy sector in March 2007.
The concept of Posit+ve Energy was developed by Zoë Ingle and Jenny Briggs, after they discovered that there was no international networking facility for women who work in the energy industry. Long associated with middle-aged, grey-suited members of the ‘old boy’s network’, the energy industry has taken some time to acknowledge the prevalence of its female workers and the achievements of the many pioneering women that have driven, and continue to drive, energy organisations.
With support from the Posit+ve Energy Advisory Group, research from a number of universities and data agencies, Posit+ve Energy was created to provide online and face-to-face opportunities for the achievements of women in the industry to be recognised. We hope that Posit+ve Energy will enable energy executives across the world to meet and exchange the wisdom of their experiences, building relationships and furthering their career options.

The Posit+ve Energy Online Network
Networking has been shown to be related to increased job performance, opportunities and promotion, income and satisfaction (Vinnicombe et al., 2004).
Following the success of the first Posit+ve Energy Day on 10th July 2007 the online network was launched to enable members to network virtually, access key research, read about what is happening in the energy industry, receive news and career information and most importantly to be kept up to date.
